WHAT IS A CLNC?
A Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is a Registered Nurse who has completed an intensive certification program that prepares the individual to assist attorneys with any medical-related legal case. Ongoing continuing education in the field of legal nurse consulting is required to maintain certification.
In a given medical-legal case, the legal nurse consultant wears one of two hats:
Consulting Nurse Expert (e.g. Rheaume & Associates)
- usually works behind the scenes to assist the attorney in exploring the medical issues of the case
- reviews the medical record comprehensively in the context of current standards of care
- assists the attorney to identify and locate the best testifying experts for a case
- can assist the attorney throughout the life of the case, from pre-filing, through discovery, to settlement or trial conclusion.
- generally, the Consulting Expert's work product is not discoverable
Testifying Nurse Expert (Rheaume & Associates offers testifying nurse/MD expert location services)
- work product is discoverable
- must limit testimony to the nursing issues of the case
